Anthony Viggiani
USMC CWO4, Gunner
Chief Warrant Officer 4, Anthony L. Viggiani enlisted in the Marine Corps in Cleveland, Ohio in 1998. In October of 1999, he was hand selected to provide security for the President of the United States at Camp David until January 2001. During his tour he worked with the FBI, CIA, DSS and Secret Service providing security for President Clinton, President G.W. Bush, other dignitaries, and VIPs.
After completing his tour at Camp David, Corporal Viggiani deployed to Afghanistan supporting Operation Line Backer. He would be awarded the Navy Cross during this deployment for his actions in Afghanistan. Upon returning from Afghanistan, he was Combat meritoriously promoted to Staff Sergeant and served as a Platoon Sergeant until he received orders to be a Drill Instructor at MCRD Parris Island.
Viggiani again deployed to Afghanistan. During an operation and under a hail of enemy fire, he eliminated an enemy position, which was actively firing upon friendly forces. Killing three enemy fighters, Sergeant Viggiani destroyed the enemy strongpoint and allowed his company to continue their advance up to the ridgeline, solidly defeating the enemy by killing a total of fourteen Anti-Coalition fighters. In the process, he was wounded by rifle fire from the adjacent enemy position, yet he continued to lead his Marines in the attack.
After his second deployment to Afghanistan, Viggiani served as the Training and Education Command Gunner for his last tour and retired from the Marine Corps after twenty-four years of honorable and faithful service.
His personal decorations include the Navy Cross, Legion of Merit, Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (6th award, 1 with combat V), Joint Service Achievement Medal, Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and Combat Action Ribbon.
